A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the speed and handling of the country's key public works projects.
The crash happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We will meticulously determine the cause of this tragedy,” declared the head of state.
The official announced that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The president stated plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the previous administration, whose term finished the prior year. This venture was closely associated with his administration's economic goals for the southeastern region.
Another massive train initiative from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Worries
The development of both train projects was overseen by the nation's military, marking a significant growth of its responsibilities in civilian projects. They were completed at an accelerated pace, beating predictions to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously fueled significant concerns over safety standards.
- Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This involves an prior accident this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the tragedy, the head of a major opposition party demanded an immediate halt in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This pause was proposed pending a thorough safety audit. The party declared that the tragedy "demands prompt explanations."
In reaction, the head of state maintained that the train had been functioning in total compliance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and running of these strategic undertakings.
